From Certification to Inclusion: How 28DIGITAL Is Shaping European AI
The European Union's approach to artificial intelligence is distinctive. Where other major…
28DIGITAL has opened applications for the new edition of SPIN: Explore, its introductory programme designed to help researchers and scientists take their first steps towards innovation and entrepreneurship.
Over the course of approximately nine hours of online learning, participants are guided through key topics including how to identify the value of their research, understand different pathways to market such as startups, licensing or industry collaboration, and navigate the fundamentals of intellectual property.
The programme also places strong emphasis on communication, helping participants develop the ability to present complex scientific ideas clearly and effectively to non-expert audiences, as well as assess the readiness of their innovation using recognised frameworks.
SPIN: Explore is developed in collaboration with leading partners from across Europe’s innovation ecosystem, combining expertise in deep-tech, venture building, and research commercialisation. This collaborative approach ensures that participants benefit from both academic and industry perspectives, gaining a realistic understanding of how innovation journeys unfold beyond the laboratory.
But what really sets the programme apart is its focus on mindset. Rather than pushing participants to immediately launch a venture, it creates the conditions for exploration and reflection, enabling researchers to recognise the broader potential of their work and preparing them for 28DIGITAL’s pre-incubation SPIN: RISE programme on IP valorisation strategies.
It is also designed to be accessible and inclusive: SPIN: Explore is free to attend and open to researchers at any career stage.
The results of previous editions underline the programme’s relevance and effectiveness. The 2025 edition attracted 170 applications and brought together 117 participants from 29 countries, representing more than 50 universities and research organisations. The programme also achieved a balanced and inclusive cohort, with women making up just over half of all participants.
As Federico Menna, CEO of 28DIGITAL, explains, “Europe has extraordinary research talent, but too often its potential remains locked within laboratories. With SPIN: Explore, we are giving researchers the tools and confidence to think differently about their work, and to explore pathways towards impact, innovation, and entrepreneurship. This is where the journey begins.”
Applications are now open until 5 June 2026. As places are limited, early application is strongly encouraged.
